The Bitcoin Standard

Because Bitcoin has a fixed supply of 21 million coins, it is a deflationary asset. Unlike fiat currencies (like the US Dollar) which can be printed indefinitely, Bitcoin becomes scarcer over time. This means its purchasing power tends to increase. When you measure the price of goods and services in Bitcoin, they generally get cheaper over time.

Example: A New Car

In 2017: A $30,000 car would have cost approximately 30 BTC (at ~$1,000/BTC).
In 2024: A $40,000 car would cost approximately 0.6 BTC (at ~$67,000/BTC).

The car became more expensive in dollars but dramatically cheaper in Bitcoin.

Example: A House

In 2017: A $300,000 house would have cost approximately 300 BTC.
In 2024: A $450,000 house would cost approximately 6.7 BTC.

This demonstrates how assets priced in a deflationary currency (Bitcoin) become more affordable over time, while assets priced in an inflationary currency (fiat) become more expensive.
